How to Make Your House Smell Amazing

Latter-day Woman Team

If you’ve ever battled with the thought that your house never smells amazing, here are some fresh tips to keep your house smelling good all the time.

The first step in any fresh smelling home is to get rid of bad smells. You don’t just want to mask existing odors! Here are a few ways to rid your house of any bad odors first. (Feel free to skip the first part if you already know these tricks!)

Empty Garbage Cans Regularly

When it comes to removing household smells, you have to find the source. Some of your bad odors might be coming from your trash. Be sure to change your kitchen and bathroom can liners every couple days, or more often if you detect an odor.

Sprinkle Baking Soda Before Vacuuming

To deodorize your carpet, mix baking soda and some essential oil drops in a bowl, then sprinkle on your carpet or rug. Let it sit as long as overnight to really absorb odors!

Clean Out Refrigerator

Go through it once a week and toss items that are past their prime. A little hack is to put an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator to absorb odors.

Open the Windows

A great way to freshen the air in your home is to open the windows. Even just for an hour or two! You can get rid of cooking smells, or any other stale or lingering odor this way.

Now that we have the bad smells gone, let’s add some goodness to your home.

Get an Air Purifier

To help keep your home smelling fresh all the time, run an air purifier regularly. In addition to eliminating household odors, it also reduces dust and pollen.

Use a Daily Shower Cleaner

There are a couple benefits to using a daily shower cleaner. Your shower will stay cleaner longer, and it will prevent a mildewy smell.

Put Essential Oil Drops in Your Furnace Filter

Sprinkle a few drops of your favorite essential oils right onto your furnace filter to keep the scent pumped throughout your home.

Stovetop Potpourri

Simmer some potpourri right on your stovetop by adding potpourri to some water in a pan. You can also make your own mixture with things like citrus peels, cinnamon sticks, and your favorite herbs.

Clip Febreze Vent Clips to Your Home Vents

Typically designed for the car, try using the Febreze vent clips on the vents in your home. Your furnace or air conditioner will push the scent out into your home.

Try an Oil Diffuser

Just add some water and drops of your favorite essential oils, and enjoy the scent all day.

Use Drain Cleaner

Your sink drains can be another contributing factor to the way your house smells. Make sure you clean it regularly.

Use Candles or Wax Melts

Scented candles are one of my favorite ways to make our house smell good. Or if you don’t want to burn candles, use a wax melt. It creates scent by melting wax cubes with a lightbulb, so there’s no need for a flame.

Scent Booster Hack

Put some scent boosters in little mesh bags (or old nylons), and place around your home or in your drawers! Your clothes will smell so good, and keep your drawers from getting that stale odor. If you have a wax melt warmer, you can also use scent boosters instead of traditional wax melts.
